The Pop-Up Book of Westerly School Project

With the Ocean Community Chamber Foundation and the Westerly Public Elementary Schools

When we learned about the creation of The Pop-Up Book of Westerly, we knew it would be something all the families, with children in the Westerly elementary schools would treasure forever.

The book, created and produced by Lisa Konicki of the Ocean Community Chamber Foundation, was to include pop-up pictures by local artist Lisa Szaro. Much loved landmarks including the Ocean House, The Babcock-Smith House Museum, The Flying Horse Carousel, The United Theater, The Westerly Public Library and Wilcox Park fill the pages. We wanted to make sure every family could have their very own copy.

Opening Doors reached out to Lisa Konicki, and to our school contacts to arrange to make this happen. Everyone was enthusiastic, and we were able to purchase over 700 books for delivery in the second printing. On February 4, at each of the three schools Spring Brook, Dunns Corners, and State Street, all of the children, their teachers and principals, came to a surprise presentation explaining how the book was created and the landmarks that pop-up as the pages turn. They were thrilled to learn they each would receive a family copy to take home at the end of the school dayU
